Why do I need a spring clean-up?

Many home owners find themselves wondering, “Why do I need a spring clean-up?” and “What are the benefits of having it done?”. There are many reasons landscape professionals will tell you why a spring clean-up is a necessity, but they might not be explaining it fully. Big Red’s Landscape & Design strongly recommends a spring clean-up because it will help strengthen turf against environmental stresses, pests, weeds, and diseases. It will also help us find any issues before the growing season so we can get on a corrective plan and ensure future lawn treatments are more effective. Another reason for a spring clean-up is simply to make your property look better throughout the growing season. Big Red says if you want to have a successful growing season, it should begin with a spring-clean-up.

The most important reason for a spring clean-up is to help strengthen the turf against environmental stresses, pests, weeds, and disease. The spring clean-up does this by removing debris built up from the winter which could have been smothering your lawn creating a habitat for disease and pests. Additionally, over the winter the soil tends to get compacted from the snow and moisture so by doing a spring clean-up it could lessen the effects of soil compaction. Which will lead to a healthier lawn that will be more resistant to disease and pests without use of chemical treatments. Spring clean-ups also help with weed issues by creating a healthier root system that will “choke out” weak weeds that try to grow through the grass. Spring clean-ups will not eliminate pest and diseases but will give us the opportunity to inspect the lawn early in the season so we can develop a plan to correct any issues.

The second most important reason for a spring clean-up is the opportunity to inspect the lawn in the very beginning of the growing season which will help us identify issues and create a corrective plan. Spring clean-ups also help ensure future lawn treatments are more effective by removing debris which allows the ground to breathe and be able to intake nutrients, water, and sunlight. Future lawn treatments such as weekly maintenance, fertilizer, pesticide, or herbicide maybe not be as effective without a spring clean-up due to the built-up debris preventing elements from penetrating the soil. The goal of a spring clean-up is to get your lawn looking great for the growing season.

The third most important reason for a spring clean-up is very simple; to get your property looking it’s best for the growing season. In order for your property to look green, healthy, and clean it only makes sense to start with a spring clean-up. If not, debris buried in the thatch of the lawn will always be visible giving it a brownish undertone instead of the vibrant green, we all want. Additionally, by cleaning out the beds and shrubs of winter debris this will give the overall property a cleaner appearance. In the end, you will not have a successful growing season without taking the right steps from the beginning.

In conclusion, spring clean-ups are essential for a healthy and happy lawn because it is the building block of the growing season. By performing a spring clean-up you are strengthening the lawn, ensuring future treatments are effective, and making your property look better. Here at Big Red’s we provide a few extra services during the spring clean-up to help ensure you have a successful growing season and are happy with your lawn.
